The Truckee Donner Lodge offers a convenient location near Donner Lake and Truckee, with a generally positive reputation for cleanliness and value. However, recent reviews indicate a decline in service quality and upkeep, particularly concerning cleanliness issues and responsiveness from management. Recent changes in ownership appear to have negatively impacted the guest experience.
Great location. Only 5 minutes from town but quiet, surrounded by trees and 3 minutes from Donner Lake. However, this last trip showed change of ownership. Rooms weren't cleaned properly (trash cans not emptied, trash under the bed and hallway) breakfast food was substandard and male manager giving everyone a suspicious glare, it used to be a great place to stay but now mediocre. Television only showed a dozen channels. Everything just changed and not for the better.
I stayed here the night of the 4th of July. My daughter and her family were camping at the Donner campground right next door and I don't do too well with dry camping at my age. So I was only planning on being in the hotel room to sleep and shower. The front desk ladies at check in and check out were very nice but I was not impressed at all with the room. Instead of going directly through the lodge to book, I used Booking.com because they had a better rate. And everyone knows that when you don't book direct, you're given a room that's less desirable than if you booked directly with the hotel. But still, for $300 a night the room that I was assigned looked more like a $99 a night room. The quality of the sheets were terrible. Thin and so badly wrinkled! I even found a bug on top of the comforter looking thing. I went to flick it off and it went flying. I mean it had wings and I never saw it again. The bathroom was the worst! The wood on the door was peeling from the bottom. And the door itself had seen better days. The shower wall was a darker color from the top of the bathtub to about 1/4 way up. So was there mold behind there? Most likely since it was noticeable in the caulking in many places of the bathroom. Thankfully the TV (with adequate channels), fridge (and the tiny freezer I did use), the lighting, blackout curtains, etc. All else was in good working condition. But I just cannot see staying here again at that ridiculous rate!
Literally the least accommodating hotel I have ever paid 200 plus dollars per night for. The bathroom was covered in someone before us's pubes. Been trying to get ahold of management for 4 days now and the staff can't seem to help me with that either. Their refundable 100 dollar deposit was taken from my wife's card, and my card with no refund, and we even cleaned our room after our stay. The front desk staff has major attitude when guests need something. Would not reccomend this place even to my worst enemie. Reccomendment for management - clean house your young receptionist isnt fit for the job.
This is a nice hotel. Location is nice & easy to get to everything. Price was great. Rooms where good & continental breakfast was a nice touch. Building is a little dated but that's part of the charm of Truckee. Would go here again if we're in the area.
We booked a room at Truckee Donner Lodge specifically because it was Father’s Day and we planned to spend the day at Donner Lake boating and swimming, then come back to the hotel to relax in the hot tub before going out to dinner. When we arrived to check in, we discovered that both the pool and hot tub were completely closed off with caution tape. This was extremely disappointing, as the hot tub was one of the main reasons we chose this hotel and paid for a room. We asked the front desk if a discounted rate could be offered since the amenities we booked the hotel for were unavailable. The front desk employee told us there was nothing she could do because the manager was not there. Had we known the pool and hot tub would be closed, we would have booked somewhere else. There was no prior notice given before arrival, and no effort was made to compensate guests for the inconvenience. We did check in, but after realizing the amenities we specifically booked the hotel for were unavailable and no accommodation could be offered, we decided to leave rather than stay the night. It was a complete waste of time and money and put a damper on what was supposed to be a relaxing Father’s Day celebration. We understand maintenance issues happen, but guests should be notified in advance and offered some form of accommodation when major amenities are unavailable. Unfortunately, this experience fell far short of expectations, and we would not choose to stay here again due to customer service
Great hotel, nice, clean, convenient. Arrived by train, no car. No problem, there is a T.A.R.T free bus stop across the street. It runs every hour on the hour from Amtrak station to many places. Breakfast was great. Walking distance to Donner park museum.
Really nice hotel room—clean and quiet. The lobby’s automatic coffee machine was a pleasant surprise! One suggestion: please turn off the alarm when cleaning the room. I was woken up at 6 AM and what made it worse- I didn’t know how to turn it off.
This is a great hotel at a reasonable price! The rooms are large and clean. The bed is dated but acceptable. The shower was great with loads of water pressure. And the staff was super efficient upon check in. I'd come back, for sure.
Convenient for a family of 4. Spacious and clean room. Seems mostly recently renovated. Microwave and fridge in the room. Parking is close out front. Elevator is a little slow.
Impossible to reach management / Predatory policies Extremely disappointed in the management at Truckee Donner Lodge. I spent an entire week trying to resolve a travel issue caused by extreme weather and highway closures. The front desk repeatedly claimed the manager was 'unavailable' and refused to help with an Expedia modification, despite the hotel being unreachable due to the storm. They are hiding behind 'non-refundable' fine print to profit off of families who are stuck behind road closures. There are many other lodges in Truckee that actually care about their guests and understand mountain logistics—stay elsewhere.
